Sweet Surrender; the Triangles

I have hand quilting and hand applique for slow stitching work but I also have a project to sew with my sewing machine.

Sweet Surrender is another quilt on my list of 10 to be sewn into a flimsy in 2018. The applique triangles have been completed for probably a year. I have been procrastinating on piecing the pieced triangles but now I've started!

The triangles are not trimmed. I'll trim all of them at the same time and cut the applique triangles apart too.

Sweet Surrender was designed by Susanne Cody. You can read about my Sweet Surrender journey here.

Hand Quilting & Applique

The middle row of Spring Fever has been quilted.

Left side.

Center blocks.

Right side.

What I'm quilting now.

I'm still frustrated by the King Tut thread. Using Thread Heaven has helped immensely but there are still too many knots and loops. I'll never use this thread again!

Evenings are when I like to applique. I'm working on the first two borders of the Pastor's Attic quilt. I know, poor quality photo.

Yes, it is going to be straight vine appliqued. Every time I tried to envision a curved vine in my mind, the vine straightens into a straight line so that's the way it is going to be.

Giant Churn Dash Crib Quilt

Last November I pieced a giant churn dash crib quilt to demonstrate spiral quilting at a guild meeting. That meeting was Monday evening. It was a short demonstration but the members learned how to get started. I've finished the quilting, added the binding and now I have a  finish.

He measures 48" by 54", a nice sized crib quilt.

The white fabric has small pink dots. I was rather disappointed that the fabric was rather blah. I added a flange binding and the aqua fabric added some zing to the outside edge and woke up the dots!

I sewed leftover fabric together to make the backing.

Now I can go check this project off the list.

The Pastors Attic Quilt, A Baltimore Album Quilt

Other blogs are posting about starting new projects for this New Year. I also have a couple of new projects I will be starting to piece but I'll talk about them in a different post.

My main goal in 2018 is to finish up several unfinished quilts that are in varying stages of progress. I've made a list of 10 projects. Will I actually get 10 quilts all pieced? No,  but I'm hoping to get at least 5 of them into the flimsy stage and make progress on the others.

I will talk about each quilt as I work on it. I am not going to rush myself, just plod along at my own pace.

First on the list is the Pastor's Attic Quilt.

The center is pieced and the borders are finally marked.

A start has been made, these are 2 flower buds on the first border.

The Pastor's Attic Quilt book was written by Marsha D. Radtke in 2009 and published by AQS. She found the original quilt in the attic of the parsonage in which they were living. I call it the Pastor's Attic Quilt (and she does too in the forward) because there are so many Baltimore Album quilts and I want to differentiate my quilt from the crowd. This book is now out of stock.

Hoffman Watercolor Palette Quilt

I bought the inside panel of this quilt from the resale table at the Jane Stickle retreat last November. I had originally planned to use it on the back of another crib quilt but changed my mind.

I liked the panel and decided it deserved to have a chance to be a lovely crib quilt, which it did. She measures 48" by 57".

I did the fun easy piecing before Christmas and completed the spiral quilting last week on my home sewing machine.

The panel is a Hoffman Watercolor Palette. The date on the top left corner (not shown) says 2015.

I put a pretty batik on the back. I had purchased this fabric several years ago at the retreat but never found the right project for her.

I liked the colors but my favorite reason for buying the fabric was the butterflies. They add a touch of spring to the quilt.

Of course this post wouldn't be complete without a picture of the quilt on a pile of snow in my yard.

The Hoffman  Watercolor Palette quilt is my first complete finish of this new year.

First Row Quilted

The first row of Spring Fever is quilted!

I took the picture from the other end of the quilt for a change.

The quilting on the blocks is an overall design. I'm liking how this looks and it quilts fairly fast too.

I've rolled and started on the next row. I don't know how much quilting will happen this week, the dreaded cracks are starting to appear in my thumbs!

A couple weeks ago I made the comment about how the King Tut thread was tangling and knotting so easily. Someone suggested waxing it. I probably have some beeswax somewhere from my candlewicking days back in the 80's but I pulled out my little blue box of Thread Heaven to use. This has helped immensely so thanks to whoever it was who suggested it.

Regatta Quilt

Roseanne and Peggy had a sew-along yesterday with the Regatta pattern. The sew-along was announced November 10th and the date set for New Years Day, 2018. What a wonderful way to celebrate the start of a new year.

I've used a jelly roll I bought at Calico Point. They sell both regular jelly rolls and rolls they cut themselves. Since jelly roll is a copyrighted term, Calico Point calls the rolls they cut a Calico Whirl.

The roll I selected has blue and blue/gray fabrics, the white strips are cut from my bolt of Bella Snow.

I started sewing the strips on Saturday and finished the flimsy today. I really like the colors. I'm normally a symmetrical person but decided to the arrange the values asymmetrically.

I usually take pictures on the clothesline but I just checked the weather channel to see what the temperature is; 2 degrees, wind chill factor -16 degrees. Sorry, no way am I going to take a picture outside.

This was a fun, simple pattern to sew. I will definitely use this pattern again.
